Trail Etiquette
The Township of Ignace encourages all users to follow some basic tips when using our trails.
- Share the trail
- Be prepared and stay within skill level
- Always announce your intent to pass and allow others to pass safely
- Respect the sound of nature. Avoid loud voices and noises such as mobile phones and radios
- Use only marked trails and follow the signs
- Do not trespass on private land
- Stay on the trails to avoid damaging nearby vegetation
- Leave plants and small creatures in their natural habitats
- Do not remove or damage artifcats
- Fires are not permitted along trails, except in approved camp sites
- Use waste receptacles or carry your litter home
- Respect the privacy of people living adjacent to trails
- Keep your pet on a leash
- Pick up after your dog

Agimak Lake Trail (moderate to difficult- 15 portages)
The Agimak Trail canoe route from Ignace to White Otter Lake came into prominence following the Township’s birth as a railway point for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1879 but pottery fragments and stone tools found at campsites and on portages attest to usage by aboriginal inhabitants for thousands of years before the Department of Lands and Forests sent fire rangers to clear portages for firefighting purposes and early settlers began canoeing into the wilderness. At the turn of the 20th century, Jimmy McQuat began hauling supplies from Ignace for his Castle on White Otter Lake.
Agimak Trail Facts:
- Preferred paddling: Full Season (mid-May to mid- October)
- The route can also be accessed at Devil’s Gap Lake. From Hwy 17 (22 km west of Ignace), go south on Doreen lake Road; proceed 26 km to intersection, then 4.5 km east on Moosehide Road (portage 11 crosses the road).
- Devil’s Gap Lake has pictographs south of the gap.
