The Township of Ignace and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) are organizing virtual community workshops to further explore Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel and the possibility of hosting the project in the area. These workshops are intended to explore the community’s expectations for the project, key questions and concerns we need to address, and opportunities for the Centre of Expertise to contribute to the community and area.

We need your input! We invite you to join with fellow Ignace residents online to explore the NWMO project and your expectations if it were to come to the area.

Mayor’s Message May 6th, 2020

I know a number of people were having difficulty signing in to the Special Meeting of Council May 4th, 2020 – we continue to work on that – making it easier for people to connect to our virtual meetings. We thank you for your patience as we learn these new realities. For those of you who were able to hook up, Council thanks you for your interest.

Thank you, Deputy Mayor Debbie Hart, for stepping up to the plate when the community needed you most. We are in your debt. I would like to thank Cllrs Shaun Defeo and Greg Waldock for supporting my appointment as Mayor. I look forward to finalizing our team with the addition of Cllr Chantelle Dufault-Tucker and working with all of you for the future of Ignace.

To the people of Ignace, I want to thank all of you for your support during my time as Councillor. I know Council can continue to count on that same support as we move Ignace forward – first past this global pandemic and then into a brighter future. I encourage you to continue to reach out to me for any reason or for no reason at all. I serve at your pleasure.

Council thanks the staff of the Township for their tireless efforts in ensuring that all the t’s are crossed, the i’s dotted and the work was done as we went through this transition period.

We continue to access resources and protections afforded by Ignace’s Declaration of Emergency on April 20, 2020 as we make our way through and past the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you to the Emergency Operations Control group for your efforts in keeping Ignace safe.

I look forward to working with and for all of you. Penny Lucas, Mayor

NWMO Covid-19 Donation

As part of the Province of Ontario’s collective effort to reduce and prevent the spread of COVID-19, we are working diligently to implement best possible pandemic response practices and approaches in our community.

In that vein, we have been truly fortunate to receive a one-time investment of $25,000 from the NWMO to assist with our local response to COVID-19. Our Fire Chief and Emergency Operations Control Group will work together to determine how we can best utilize these resources to meet the needs of our community.

This investment will support our community’s efforts to better manage the pandemic, such as in the areas of community well-being, health and safety concerns, food insecurities and basic supplies that will help community members cope during these challenging times.

We are facing a truly unprecedented, complex situation together. The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all of our families, businesses, communities and our way of life. During this difficult time, we sincerely appreciate the support of the NWMO in assisting communities involved in the site selection process.

Sincerely,

Mayor Donald Cunningham

To the Citizens of Ignace

I would like to inform all citizens of Ignace that the Township of Ignace is doing its part to ensure that necessary steps are being taken to help protect our community.

The Township of Ignace and relevant community stakeholders have initiated Emergency Operations Group meetings to discuss actions being taken at the community level. As you are likely aware, the province of Ontario has declared a state of emergency to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. The Township of Ignace will continue to meet with stakeholders regularly as the situation related to COVID-19 continues to change.

We are committed to protecting the health and safety of our community. It is our hope that community citizens will follow the recommendations being released by health officials:

Essential services will continue to be offered in our community, however, some services may be offered a bit differently than usual. We’d like to encourage everyone to help protect the community members who work hard every day to deliver essential services to us all. Please follow the above recommendations to help keep yourself and our community safe.

We recognize that many of the changes/closures that are occurring may be inconvenient. Please remember that these measures are necessary to protect the health of our community.

If you have any questions about COVID-19, please call Northwestern Health Unit’s COVID-19 hotline at 1-866-468-2240.

Thank you.
Fire Chief Berube
